actually Daughtry aint too bad, but i wouldn’t pay to see him/them. The rest are just God-awful, although don’t be surprised if a buncha yinzers turn out for STYX
is much too generous a way to described Styx. My sentiments exactly: Top 10 Bands who sold out to mass hysteria of Bubblegum Chewing Teeny Bopping Girls. I will start the list : REO SPEEDWAGON, ASIA, GENESIS, STYX, FOREIGNER.
…Nursery Cryme, Foxtrot, Selling England by the Pound ,The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway ,A Trick of the Tail and Wind & Wuthering are their best albums. I am of the opinion that it was Steve Hackett and not so much Peter Gabriel which made their “classic” line up awesome. Had he stayed, perhaps he could have helped to reign in Phil Collins during the 80s and 90s.
..that I laughed til I cried the first time I read your write-up of that epic disaster of a game against the Padres and I did so again now. THAT was the Best. Game. Write-Up. Ever.
Now if anyone could re-post a link to Cocktail’s epic “Lars” computer-generated diatribe, this evening of mirth would be complete.
With the headline and today’s SOPA/PIPA activities (and MLB’s position on the wrong side of the issue), I fully expected the article to be about a bunch of Yinzers who the RIAA busted for downloading Donny Iris tracks on Napster…
Actually, I know that I’ve heard of Lifehouse, because whenever I’ve heard the name, I think, “There’s a band named after the Who’s failed 1971 concept album that ultimately resulted in Who’s Next, arguably the greatest rock album of all time?”
A recent lack of hits and a wimpy public presence haven’t deterred a devoted fan base that still clings to the glory days of the 1970s. It’s a miracle.
Cause I gotta say, on the basis of the one I’ve been to (REO Speedwagon), Skyblast was a … well, a blast. And I ain’t apologizing to no one fer it. Kevin Cronin came offstage and ran around the bases, and who among us hasn’t wanted to do that?
BTW, who’s still in Styx, anyway? Didn’t the rest of the band eventually despise Dennis DeYoung, and didn’t he develop some kind of weird allergy to light?
I was riding around with a friend, and put on 157 Riverside Ave (live version) for my friend as an excellent example of what Gene and Dean Ween refer to as “wheedla wheedla wheedla” stuff.
That issue of Spin came out a couple months before I graduated college. I’m feeling all hazy now. And not because I was stoned then or now; just because mainlining nostalgia like that can fuck you up.
My best friend in high school actually did the “I don’t know” bit between Spiccoli and Mr. Hand with one of his teachers: “‘Am I going to pass this semester?’ Gee, Mr. Weindorf, I don’t know.”
Also, I used to use a font for my drawings that looked like old fashioned drafting, and was named Mr. Hand in honor of the character.
… what type of highlights are likely to appear on the Jumbotron?
(Someone is going to tell them that it will be obligatory to play Renegade, right…? I can’t say I understand at what point that became a big theme at the Steeler games, but I imagine that those in the stands will be waiting for that one….)
I think Wiz might be too big at this point. He’s penetrated the Top 40 and played at the AFC Championship game. I’d be surprised if he’d stoop to just a weekend Pirate game at this point. Girl Talk would be sweet, but those shows are really about dancing which doesn’t really mesh well with sitting in your seat surrounded by old people.
And finally, the problem with Mac Miller is he’s just not popular enough. People want to be able to sing along. He’s had one song in the Top 40? And he doesn’t really appeal to the main ticket buying demographic.
Because Boyz II Men makes me think of Bell Biv Devoe and Bell Biv Devoe makes me think of New Edition and New Edition makes me think of Maurice Starr and Maurice Starr makes me think of the Jonzun Crew and the Jonzun Crew makes me think of this and that shit is amazing. (Skip to 0:26 if you don’t want to listen to the German guy.)
holy hell that's some piss-poor acts
actually Daughtry aint too bad, but i wouldn’t pay to see him/them. The rest are just God-awful, although don’t be surprised if a buncha yinzers turn out for STYX

I wouldn’t seek it out or anything, but if I blundered into a STYX concert, I’d probably stay and listen.

haha
same here

Styx is the greatest band in the world and they only got a bad rep because most critics are cynical assholes.
SuperBaes - January 18, 2012
The greatest band in the world?
That’s a bit much.
maguro - January 18, 2012
way overrated

AHHHHH... thanks for making me feel young!
and Daughtry = the love child Ryan Seacrest and the lead singer of Creed = the poster child for the morning after pill
Cheap Beer - January 18, 2012
The birth children of Rush. I would probably like rush if they had not spawned these bands.
PensFan024 - January 19, 2012
WHAT?
REO has nothing in common with Rush, and Genesis was around LONG before them…
cocktailsfor2 - January 19, 2012
I mean, seriously, Asia?
You framed an Asia poster? How hard did the people at the frame store laugh when you brought this in?
Pagliaroni - January 19, 2012
Rec'd

As far as Genesis goes...
…Nursery Cryme, Foxtrot, Selling England by the Pound ,The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway ,A Trick of the Tail and Wind & Wuthering are their best albums. I am of the opinion that it was Steve Hackett and not so much Peter Gabriel which made their “classic” line up awesome. yeah, im a jerk - January 23, 2012
Mebbe so,
but I’m not sure anyone could have reined in Collins once he became the lead singer.
It really went to his head.
cocktailsfor2 - January 23, 2012
No no no.
Seriously, there was a year or two there when they were on top of the world. Right around “Equinox”/“Crystal Ball”/“The Grand Illusion” albums/tours.
bucdaddy - January 19, 2012
(it’s a line from Big Daddy)
I do love Styx, though.
SuperBaes - January 19, 2012
"is the greatest band in the world"
Van Halen, AC/DC, The Beatles, Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin would all lke to have a word with you after your finished.

I want some too.

Now when I serenade the ball girls with “I’ll Make Love To You” it won’t come off as so original.

I'm making a trip to PGH to visit PNC some weekend this summer,
And I’ll be damned if Boyz II Men didn’t make the Royals series a distinct possibility.

Hey, I love Lifehouse
and Styx was one of my favorites, back in the day (way back). Never heard of Daughtry (and I can’t look him up on Wikipedia)
Brian Cartwright - January 18, 2012
You can still use it, just keep hitting escape before it loads the SOPA page.
Or just use the mobile version because apparently they forgot that part

I guess Boyz II Men heard decided to stop by after all that talk about them in the Thanksgiving Rumbunter Podcast? Right?

cocktailsfor2 - January 18, 2012
Lifehouse surprises me a bit
Not sure that it’s the greatest pr move to book a Christian rock band… though they’re not horrible.
Cheap Beer - January 18, 2012
Hey now...
Look at what God did for the Broncos.
IAPiratesFan - January 18, 2012
Exactly
With Lifehouse at our side, we too can get eliminated from the playoffs after losing by 35.

Yes. Very will done sir.
PensFan024 - January 19, 2012
I will say, if Boyz II Men were playing after a ballgame I was attending, I’d actually be kind of psyched. The other groups, not so much.
Charlie Wilmoth - January 18, 2012
Are these all Skyblast shows?
Cause I gotta say, on the basis of the one I’ve been to (REO Speedwagon), Skyblast was a … well, a blast. And I ain’t apologizing to no one fer it. Kevin Cronin came offstage and ran around the bases, and who among us hasn’t wanted to do that?

You Get What Play For
…. it was all downhill after that. It was on 157 Riverside Ave that Kevin Cronin proved that white man can scat.
Well kinda.
Still love it when Kevin and Gary mix it up on that tune.

So if Styx plays "Renegade" during their set...
