Neal Huntington somehow hadn't crossed Daniel Cabrera off his bucket list, but I suppose he has now. Cabrera hasn't pitched in the states since 2010. By his last couple years in the big leagues, he wasn't throwing nearly as hard as he did when he first came up with the Orioles, and he didn't exactly make up for the decline in velocity with stellar control. The velocity drop led to many fewer strikeouts, which made him a pretty horrible pitcher overall. Even as a Class AAA signing, this looks like a stretch, but who knows?
see, NH wasnt done yet.

white angus - January 27, 2012
we all knew he had something working behind the scenes
Where we considered a Mystery Team for Daniel Cabrera’s services?
BigB2323 - January 27, 2012
nope
thats what makes it oh so special.
white angus - January 27, 2012
The buccos are the mystery to the mystery team
BigB2323 - January 27, 2012
lighting in a bottle
man if this guy could get things together. great movement ,with no control of it.
sweetleb - January 27, 2012
Put him on
the Morton plan!
NHpiratefan - January 27, 2012
We were all clamoring for something
Be careful what you wish for…
SuperBaes - January 27, 2012
Evidently, the dumpster isn’t empty yet.
Thunder - January 27, 2012
unless Pittsburgh is the dumpster
then we’re almost there
white angus - January 27, 2012
Last train stop before oblivion
WTM - January 27, 2012
There were reports that Cabrera was going to play winter ball in the DWL, but I can’t find evidence that he actually did.
He’s coming off of TJ, which explains why he didn’t pitch in 2011.
Vlad - January 27, 2012
This was a name I was not expecting to hear today.
Kosstic518 - January 27, 2012 via mobile
Well................he's tall.
Never any harm in bringing as many guys as you can into camp.
impliedi - January 27, 2012
We all know the truth....
Nutting has all of these leftover blank big & tall uniforms that he purchased for Ohlendorf and DLee, and he had no one that could use them….
Sale the team!
impliedi - January 27, 2012
And Colome is 6'2"...if that gives you any idea about Cabrera...
impliedi - January 27, 2012
And I'm not quite sure what he's doing here, but I believe Cabrera is pulling up (or down) his pants...
impliedi - January 27, 2012
I assume this was from the Pedroia near-beaning
impliedi - January 27, 2012
So
what’s going on here? An attempted mooning?
Pagliaroni - January 27, 2012
Chicken dance?
Vlad - January 27, 2012
im more disturbed by Trembey trying to assist him.
white angus - January 27, 2012
I was at this game!
He threw 4 straight strikes and got a boner. Time was called, Big Papi was called out to talk to him and a minute later he was okay to pitch again.
yellowpotbelly - January 27, 2012
Hold on
You’re not kidding about the boner, are you?
JRoth95 - January 27, 2012
I can understand
how getting called out by Big Papi would cause you to lose a hard-on.
Pagliaroni - January 27, 2012
Trembly is going straight for it!
SLR - January 27, 2012
Fun stat: 162 major league appearances, 71 wild pitches thrown.
I’m just having fun about the Cabrera signing. As I said, I have no problem bringing as many guys into Spring Training as you can.
impliedi - January 27, 2012
There are only so many lockers at Pirate City and McKechnie Field. They have to stop sometime.
Thunder - January 27, 2012
1B Russ Canzler
was just designated for assignment by the Rays, has to go through waivers first. Thoughts?
SteelStealth - January 27, 2012
I'd probably take him over Hague.
Less BA., but more power and defensive versatility.
Vlad - January 27, 2012 via mobile
Pirates need to do more this offseason
Have some balls and sign harden and sheets. Between bedard sheets and harden I feel confident 2 will pan out. This would be a very bold move, and is exactly what the pirates need to do at this point. If we are out of contention come deadline, which I highly doubt with these 3 amended starters, we can trade them along with Hanrahan, for a uber prospect. Mark it down! You heard it here first. Rotation of Charlie, bedard, Macdonald, sheets and karstens could be downright lethal
PensRock1 - January 27, 2012 via mobile
That pitching staff would keep the Indianapolis Express (a mythical pitcher shuttle between Pittsburgh and Indianapolis) running on a daily basis. That’s a lot of starts that are going to get missed.
Thunder - January 27, 2012
+1
At this point I’ll support anyone other than Correai being in the rotation. I have’nt heard the names Harden and Sheets being thrown around this off season, and I must say I like the idea (especially Sheets).
FusilliJerry88 - January 27, 2012
Sheets hasn’t thrown a single pitch since his surgery, and considering how b0rked his arm was, there’s a good chance that he never throws another one.
Vlad - January 27, 2012 via mobile
After searching for information about Sheets, you are correct Vlad. But Rich Harden, Chris Young, Scott Kazmir and maybe Justin Duchscherer should all be strongly considered by the Pirates IMO
PensRock1 - January 28, 2012
maybe they have been.
white angus - January 28, 2012
Oh, sure, kick the tires on everybody.
But Harden’s looked pretty generic the last two years, and I bet we don’t see 50 IP next year from the rest of those guys combined.
For whatever it’s worth, we took a look at Kazmir at midseason last year, and at Duchscherer over the 2010-2011 offseason.)
Vlad - January 30, 2012
Duchscherer...
has had 4 hip surgeries, back problems, shoulder issues, and clinical depression. He’s started 27 games since 2004. When he pitches, he’s a good pitcher, but he’s a walking advertisement for high risk.
Thunder - January 29, 2012
Young and Canzler
I’d be willing to bring in. The rest are just too injured, suck, or both.
Surprised Canzler got cut loose. Had a very nice season last year, but he’s the right hand hitting 3B/1B, where we already acquired Evans, Fox and McGehee
