What is being illustrated in this thread’s theme pitcure is a punt. The team with the ball is surrendering it to the opponents, since they’ve run out of downs. And in that case, the punter drops the ball in front of him, while running, and gives it a boot, to get it downfield. So the opponents have that much farther to advance the ball.
